title:Frontiers Findings From the International Lucid Dream Induction Study https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2020.01746/full#h4
Dear Alfred, First, welcome to the fantastic world of the “mind.” It is unfortunate that, consciousness, being perhaps the single most important aspect of our lives, has remained an esoteric subject through human history. Few are interested in it, and even fewer study and explore it. Those who do, however, are fortunate. On to your question. What you’ve experienced is the many fascinating sensations associated with a “trance” state, for lack of better words. If full wakefulness is “day," and dream is “night,” then this trance is “dawn” or “dusk.” What this analogy does not cover is the fact that during this state, one can readily shift between wakefulness and dream. And depend on which side you are closer to, you will experience different sensations. These sensations have been given many names, both scientific and esoteric. But I personally like to treat them as the same thing. That is — they’re sensations you feel when you enter the world of the “mind”, while leaving your physical world behind. Just as the physical world is bound to the law of physics, the mind’s world is affected by our psyche. A peaceful mind will typically result in a blissful experience, while a disturbed subconscious will manifest in some bizarre, even frightening fashions. My studies of consciousness are not based on esoteric systems which offers explanations through their particular view of the world. Therefore I rarely use, or agree to terms such as OBE. In my opinion, an OBE should be called "Out-of-body-like Experience". In fact, the more you experience, the more likely you will notice subtle anomalies that easily break the “Out of body” paradigm. Unfortunately, people who believe in esoteric systems tend to seek “proofs” more than explore. Thus they become victims of their own mind — experiencing “illusions” rather than consciousness in its purer form. The best advice I could offer to you is this — do not attempt to classify your experience because any presumptions will likely shape and confine it. The world of the mind is vast and remains relatively unknown to everyone, including those who came before us. Throw away as mush preconceptions as possible. You only need to know that you are the All Mighty in your own mind’s world. Nothing can harm you. So go, explore and enjoy! Thank you for forwarding me the article about SSILD. I’m happy to know it’s being proven scientifically, and that the myth of Reality Test — a terribly ineffective method over which I’ve had many debates with its believers, has been dispelled. Cheers
Reality Testing (RT) No significant correlations were observed between number of RT performed each day and lucid dreaming incidence. This replicates the lack of significant correlations in the RT only and the RT + WBTB + MILD groups of the NALDIS, and the lack of correlation reported by Konkoly and Burke (2019). There was no significant difference in lucid dreaming rate between the MILD + WBTB groups that did and did not perform RT during the day. These findings are consistent with the NALDIS and studies by LaBerge (1988) and Taitz (2011), in which RT was ineffective. It remains possible that RT is effective over longer periods of time, as found for 3 weeks in studies by Purcell et al. (1986) and Purcell (1988), and 8 weeks in a study by Schlag-Gies (1992). Many participants complained that performing RT was burdensome and difficult to remember. This burden may reduce motivation and compliance with more effective techniques when practiced in combination. Lucid dream induction studies should avoid daytime RT unless this technique is of specific interest. The present author believes that RT is still a valuable technique for confirming whether one is dreaming, and as a specialized lucid dreaming practice for cultivating mindfulness, which is associated with lucid dreaming (Stumbrys et al., 2015).
The Senses Initiated Lucid Dream (SSILD) Technique The SSILD technique was shown to be effective, with a large effect size and a Week 2 lucid dreaming rate of 16.9%. This rate is almost identical to the weighted average rate for the four groups that practiced the MILD technique (M = 16.5%), as well as the RT + WBTB + MILD group of the NALDIS (M = 17.4%). These findings indicate that the SSILD technique is similarly effective for inducing lucid dreams as the MILD technique. There are several possible explanations for how the SSILD technique may induce lucid dreams. One is that repeatedly focusing attention on the visual, auditory and kinesthetic sensory modalities causes a generally increased awareness of perceptual stimuli that persists into REM sleep, making it more likely that the practitioner will notice that they are dreaming, either through generally increased awareness, or through recognition of anomalies within the dream. This could also occur if repeated sensory modality shifts persist upon entering REM sleep. Indeed, one participant reported: “as I was drifting off to sleep, I found myself continuing to do the technique, even though I wasn’t trying to.” Another possible explanation is that repeatedly refocusing one’s attention on different types of perceptual stimuli causes a general increase in cortical activation that increases the likelihood of lucid dreaming.
@dreamli
