Apple Says New Macbook Pro Has Only 16Gb Of Ram To Save Bat

I actually just got a chromebook and its fantastic. I have a $800 custom PC at home that does anything requiring a heavy load, and I needed something to go on the internet with long battery life to last a day through school. Chromebooks are very underappreciated IMO (plus it was only $100).

Why are they constantly worried about the size of their notebooks? They sacrifice a better keyboard, memory and battery, to save a few millimeters of thickness, it makes no sense. The pro series should be true powerhouses, and not a slightly better regular macbook. Edit: I totally forgot about the port configuration. In terms of business usage, the pro series was really the only choice apple gave business users, but with the new port configuration, that's ruined. I have been to quite a few business meetings presenting stuff from my notebook, but now I need to carry an adapter with me at all times, if I were to get a macbook pro.
Probably not. A 16GB stick of ram probably idles at a couple hundred mW and peaks at a couple of watts. A tiny little screen and backlight could probably be dimmed when on battery and run in the tens of mW range. It could probably also be turned off. Turning off a stick of ram isn't really a thing, since DRAM needs to be refreshed frequently to retain the memory stored on it. Sorry for the lack of specific numbers, it's the weekend, I'm on mobile, and I'm not in the mood to pull up datasheets for proper references.
As long as you can use a build guide you are set. There are many out there where they say if you have these exact parts then set up should be easy and flawless. I am hoping now that they have Polaris chips then there will be drivers for the 470/480. The Nvidia drivers are still stuck in the 900 series.
That's not the point. Users want the ability to take their work with them. As an IT Admin, why should I have to get a user an imac for work and another mac they can take home as needed when I can just procure one for them to use with an external display at work. When you can do this with an older model, but cannot do this now due to a limitation of ram capacity, that is just stupid design. Not even mentioning the adaptor problems.
I don't get that most Linux pushers fail to understand this basic premise. Convince Adobe to go Linux, I'm in. Convince corporate to get off MS Office, I'm in. Then you have presentation software, it's either PowerPoint or Keynote, neither is on Linux. Sure, you can run VM, but what's the point if you are running Windows 90% of the time?
I've owned different macbooks for 8 years. After this announcement I decided to buy a dell xps instead. Cheaper and better everything. Ill miss osx though.
Been a fan of Apple myself, but they dissapoint greatly this year. They have lost their senses. They think they can churn out worse products for more money now that they have built their brand for a decade. (Cue "hur dur like they've done all along, Apple sheep") The mini jack had to go at some point, but they went about removing it completely the wrong way. I was planning on buying the iPhone 7 actually, but changed my mind when it looked like the leaked mockups where real. Now they launch a MacBook Pro with ports that not enough devices use yet, while removing the ports that most consumers still use. And as a last fuck you they didn't add a lightning port so their most loyal customers can't use their new headphones on it. I guess we will see how many where using Apple products for their quality and simplicity as time passes, and not for the brand itself. It's a shame because I hate Windows. OSX is great. I guess it's time to try Linux. I could always buy an older Mac or iPhone as well. Save some cash too.
You could also run Citrix Xen desktops and be even more secure then your current set up.
Well and the fact that the Intel chipset doesn't support 32GB of RAM. Even Apple execs BS constantly.
If battery life was their real concern, couldn't they keep it the same thickness as the previous generation and use all that extra space for more battery storage?
Because it is getting harder to innovate so they are going for low hanging fruit in order to keep things rolling.
This is exactly right, I work with eigenvalues and Eugene vectors of large matrices and I need ram and cpu power to get that work done in a timely manner and the mbp really doesn't offer that.
god what i'd give for a phone that was twice the thickness but gave me multi day battery life :( i've NEVER found myself thinking "man, my phone is just so thick and heavy" I find myself thinking "man, why the fuck is my battery dead already" almost every day -.-
Those laptops we call DTR's. And the battery life is fucking horrible. Sometimes the cpu's/gpu's can't even clock up to full throttle unless plugged into the mains. I had a w700ds with a old intel qx9300 back in 2010 and at full bore you could eek out about 25 mins of battery.. At low loads MAYBE 1.5 hours.
This is what gets me about this entire decision process. You literally cannot connect the top of the line iPhone with the top of the line MacBook Pro without an adaptor. So if they were going full USB-C, why not incorporate that into the new iPhone as opposed to the lightning plug? That way you could at least have USB-C-to-3.5mm adaptors so you can use the same pair of headphone for both your Mac and your iPhone. Why not include a Magsafe-to-C adaptor with your new laptop as opposed to paying [$40 for a third party solution?](https://griffintechnology.com/useaksafe-magnetic-usb-c-power-cable). Why is the 3.5mm obsolete on an iPhone but perfectly acceptable on a MacBook Pro? Oh that's right, I forgot, "Courage".
Exactly. They are everything the average person needs and it is crazy that apple is trying to create a market for 2000 dollar chromebooks.
>I'm talking about about **Ubuntu on an old emachine** here to be specific. >>No designer who lives on AI, PS, or any respectable pro video editing software will be using Ubuntu anytime soon. Don't think any pro video editing people will use an old emachine even if it had OSX installed.
It's not a matter of another stick of ram, but rather the fact that they would need to put a new memory system in to handle the extra capacity. My guess is the current memory controller they use is low-power and can only accommodate up to 16 gb. 32 gb would likely require a much more power hungry controller. I'm not sure how much power the touch bar uses, but OLED is fairly efficient actually. Also, many people would not need that extra ram, but they would have the memory controller in the computer anyway drawing extra power for nothing.
Ram takes a lot of battery. Apple wants to use low power Ram (LPDDR) but the chipset that they are using this year, Skylake, doesnt support more than 16 LP. So theoretically you can have 64 gigs of ram in a laptop, but its going to be a huge battery hog thats not necessary
But then they couldn't claim it was thinner than the last generation.
Why is it that data science folks prefer Macs over PC?
Turns out real courage is releasing shitty hardware and pretending you have good products.

Sad but true.
Designer here. When it comes time to buy a new laptop I ALWAYS hear designers go back and forth over power and portability. A lot of us have gone with the Air because it's nicer to commute with and it's fast enough and many creative apps allow for collapsed pallets now. I'm solidly in the 15in MBP camp, but I work with a lot of people who think I'm crazy, an Air is fine, and it's easier to manage if you're doing a lot of walking / biking to work.
You paid $300 for an extra 4gb of ram? o_O
In a laptop LCD panel the light emitters are positioned on the outside edge of the screen and illuminate a plastic light diffuser which is positioned behind the actual LCD screen. The light that exits the front of the diffuser is what we see when we look at the screen. Some of the light that exits the back of the diffuser is bounced back to the front but a large amount of light that exits the back of the diffuser is converted to heat. The small illuminated logo wouldn't make a noticeable difference in the brightness of the screen.
These new MacBooks are just horrible, I'm sorry, but they are. Mac users waited almost two years for *this*? Some gimmicky touch bar, ports that require even more adapters and dongles, and an even more inflated price tag then it already was? For what? The touch bar!?
