we as consumers are expecting more and getting more.
They're all pornhub.
Like the PS4 Pro. How can a gaming console be a professional machine?
In software development fields in which developers choose their computers, Macs are pretty much all you see.

A lot of misinformed speculation drifting to the top with hundreds of upvotes, and here you are, with the real answer, sitting at 4 upvotes.
/r/technology in a nutshell.
It's really sad that the amount of RAM is only double the amount of a high-end flagship phone.
You say crazy but people are buying them..
Not to ignore the karma train, but doesn't this have to do with the chipset they'd need to implement to address that amount of memory? I thought it was, at its core, an intel problem.
now thats a good fucking idea
I have a feeling Tim Cook has been thinking a lot about dongles.
I agree, but even if that weren't true I think the "most people" argument wouldn't even be realistic here. It's a MacBook *Pro*, and Apple don't have a great track record in recent years of actually address creative professional needs. But they're still happy to tout that aspect of the market as one of their platform's strengths. It's a significant part of their whole image and they haven't done much to cater to it in a while. Not even having a 32GB option on a "Pro" machine that costs a lot at the bottom end and crazy money at the top, that does just seem a bit ridiculous even for Apple.
I need a new computer setup for a tax write off and I'm actually looking to move away from Apple after 12 years because of this.
Why do I feel if they added 3mm of thickness back to the computer they'd have more than enough battery life for 32+GB of RAM? Seriously this is a Pro computer. you have the 12" MacBook aka the "Manager Book" ultra thin option. I need a PRO computer that can do PRO work. - A long time Mac user.

Tim Cook is really the Steve Ballmer of Apple.
But you are a pro now! Go do pro things. Like netflix pro and surfing pro.
THEN OFFER A THICKER VERSION THAT HAS A BIGGER BATTERY AND MORE RAM, FFS.
If you're buying anything called "Pro", you should have more options, not less. And compromise isn't something you are generally worrying about.
If your engineers are regularly working in a place without access to a power outlet, then they are doing it wrong.
There's a simple fix for it, and most rooms have 3-4 of them. Plug the damn thing in. If they have no power outlets, get a usable workspace.
That being said... the Surface Book's top configuration is also only 16gb, so it is definitely not just Apple limiting ram options - a ton of manufacturers are also doing it.
Question:
> Does ~3GBps bandwidth to the SSD make this a moot issue? I.e. memory paging on a 16GB system is so fast that 32GB is not a significant improvement?
Answer:
>To put more than 16GB of fast RAM into a notebook design at this time would require a memory system that consumes much more power and wouldn't be efficient enough for a notebook
How about you stop making shit so small you can't put a decent sized battery in it? This is supposed to be a MacBook PRO, not a fucking MacBook Air.
Frequently, you can code either an error-prone and RAM-conserving implementation or one that wastes RAM but is much easier to understand.
In former times, coders had to go the difficult route, which resulted in many more bugs. today, you take the easy route and only if users complain optimize it.
Also: software today is frequently sold for very little or has to earn money via ads exclusively. You don't have the time to optimize anymore.
The refreshed 13" MBP without the little screen has more battery capacity than the one with the little screen. Mobiletechreview said Apple has to reduce battery capacity to incorporate the little screen.
Edit: I should clarify that I was talking about the new 13" MBP not the last gen ones.
Well I doubt InfoSec is going to be happy about Linux laptops, then. Especially when a power outlet solves your problem.
It's nothing to do with laziness. It's everything to do with applications getting bigger, doing more, looking slicker, etc. It's everything to do with more applications open at the same time.
Years ago 480 video was wondrous. Today some apps demand 1080 or even 4k.
You mean the computer is _in_ the computer?!
How's the trackpad though? The best part of a MacBook if you ask me
Nope. To my knowledge, the MacBook Pro uses LP or "low power" RAM. Skylake mobile CPUs only allow 16GB of LP RAM. So if you wanted more you would have to use 100% regular RAM which is a power hog.
