I want a thicker phone and laptop ffa
> huge battery hog thats not necessary *for everyone*
Right; but you have the normal Macbooks for that. A MBP should be targeted for a different crowd. One who wouldn't mind it being a little thicker for a bigger batter and more ram.
Non-optical drive era here who has used the optical drive ones extensively as well. I think going thinner and lighter was a *great* idea...then. It became as thick as the MB Air was at its thickest point. Weights practically nothing, there was no need to change the physical design of it. People would have still thrown money at them with a better battery, better internal performance, and perhaps an even better screen. But no, for the sake of them trying to look innovative they're throwing darts at the board and it sucks. I knew this is the shit that would start to happen once Steve Jobs passed.
Guess they dont have as much courage as we otherwise thought
Wait...when did MacBooks get rid of the SD slot?
Do you have an idea already which brand or model?
In the new Pro.
Thank you. It sounds like a complete fabrication at first, but that makes sense.
Its £3000 for the top end model. £3000...£3000 for 2gb Radeon and 16Gb of Ram. Who is buying this?!
Can you even pay that much for a storage medium these days?
Edit: yes, enterprise grade SSDs still run into the thousands. [Here's the closest equivalent in price](http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5EM3T05202)
It's not officially a supported scenario, but it turns out that MSFT has some really great engineers and their ABI replication is so good that a lot of stuff that they didn't intend to support, just works.
Take a look at LG. I've got the V10 (now a year old..) My girlfriend has a G5. They both have easily swappable batteries.
Huge battery hog? They idle around 30mw. Full bore around 4 watts per stick. 2x16GB = 8 watts. That's not exactly slim *but you're paying close to two grand*. Make the machine 2mm thicker for a better batter and you'd be fine.

TBH, thats a plus in my book (pun sort of intended). I hate being in a dark meeting room during a presentation, taking notes (or not paying attention) and having my machine light up the room.
in 1994, my dad came home with a AST Bravo PC 486-DX 66 Mhz with 8 MB ram and a hard drive of 512 MB with a double-speed CD-ROM, and a HP deskjet C O L O R printer!!
I was floored!
I mean, we used to have a IMB / PC 2:86 with 30 MB hard drive, which meant I could only use 10 MB to games. Sure, I could get KQ 1,2 and 3 in there, Prince of Persia and even Shooting Gallery and Quest for Glory 1, but I had to delete everything just to be able to play [Monkey Island 2](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BjpCc9Wcb8)
Now we had 512 MB! I didn't even know what to do - I started with copying everything from my disks. I made a SIERRA-folder and put Kings Quest 1-3, Hero's quest 1-2, Police Quest 1-2, Space Quest 1-3 and Gold Rush in there. Having a SIERRA folder full of all the great adventure games had been such a long lasting dream.
We could also play DOOM on this computer as well as alllll the classic Lucas Arts games such as [Day of the tentacle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vJioAZ1oIY), [Sam N Max hit the road](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yWnnk9fyJE) and Rebel Assult (even though Rebel Assult always crashed, but it didn't matter because it was a pretty shitty game, I just poped it in now and then to show my friends the [intro with the original Star Wars music and that tiny cinematography piece where Luke is watching the moon and raising his hand to see better](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wYe1piKSDY).
Also, we used Corel Draw (came with a book three times the size of the bible) full of color cliparts. Then we printed stuff like a big gold bar and wrote "Gold is not all that matters" and a pirate ship where we wrote "Yaaaaar!".
(in canada) spending $5,000 on a laptop that only has 16gb of ram
lol.....
The surface book also tops out at 16GB.
> There's still no Linux kernel though, and it's strictly command line.
There's no linux kernel on a Mac either. The kernel is POSIX compliant, but you have to compile the program for MacOS, you can't just use the Linux ELF binary. In addition to this, MacOS is based on FreeBSD so there are differences there between the Linux way and the Unix way. Finally, MacOS is becoming more and more broken, see poll. If MSFT is able to fully replicate the Linux POSIX ABI then the MSFT solution is going to be better from a variety of POVs.
I should also note that I am not a Apple hater. I love my MBPr, but the PC laptop segment has caught up to the build quality of Apple and so Apple needs to be able to differentiate itself and it can no longer claim POSIX as a differentiater.
I cut my fuel tank in half to get extra fuel economy.
9/10 times on a modern windows install that blue screen is actually your graphics card fucking up.
Don't get their obsession with making everything thinner.
It's not *officially* supported but you can install an X server on Windows and then, from a Bash shell, run most graphical programs simply by exporting the DISPLAY environment variable as `:0`, like this:
```
DISPLAY=:0 gedit
```
Limits per type are on the [Intel datasheet](http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/6th-gen-core-family-mobile-u-y-processor-lines-datasheet-vol-1.html) for the chip family.
As you surmised, there 16GB is the maximum supported for LPDDR3. Look at the *LPDDR3 Supported Memory Devices* section, at the bottom of page 21 and top of page 22.
That might be exactly how Steve Jobs would phrase it to Jony Ive just before he shouted at him to get the fuck out of his office and get fucking serious and don't come back until after you've pulled your head out of your ass, if he were still around.
Most machines have the 6th gen. 7th gen just started shipping to OEMs. People don't realize its not as easy as "drop the processor in and call it day."
Theres:
- PCB layout design
- Ensuring it works with the OEMs BIOS
- TDP considerations
- GFX integration
- Making sure the chip errata doesn't make your product unusable.
- Kernel Support
- Compiler support (GCC and Clang didn't have good SKX support until 5.1+/3.8+). Hell both, still generate AVX512f on skylakes that don't support it with -march=skylake enabled. You have to explicitly add -mno-avx512f.
The list goes on... By the time a product is released with an N Gen. processor, the OEM has probably had it for at least a year.
The main issue for me isn't that they won't offer 32GB. It's that the 13" models start with 8GB and then charge $200 to upgrade to 16GB.
ThinkPads are built like a brick shithouse, too.
We are officially running our own office suite, we're a major sponsor of Libre Office. The problem is, our clients don't use that, they use Office and it needs to be 100% compatible.
Also designer... No way could I get away with an Air. I guess if all you designed was for web it would be a MAYBE. I do a lot of time critical print design and use a 27in iMac at work, 2015 15in MBP at home and I struggle on the MBP because it just doesn't have the same power or HDD space as the iMac. I really only use the MBP as my personal computer/ internet machine which is truly upsetting for a $2000 piece of hardware.
All I really want is a 15in MBP with decent battery, lots of hard drive space and beefy specs. For >$2,000 I should be able to get all that and more IMHO. Too bad windows PC would be to hard to adjust my workflow to.
