Neuroscienceisafiledthatisoverflowingwithitsownterminologyanditisimportantnottoconfuseorunderminethetopicathandbyincludingunnecessarydefinitionsorhighlytechnicaldiscussions。Thatbeingsaid,therearesomeconceptsandinsightsthatareabsolutelyessentialtotheunderstandingofhownaturalsupplementscanbeusedtoenhanceluciddreaming.ThereforeIhavetriedtokeepthissectionassimpleandstraightforwardaspossibleyetstillincludeabasicunderstandingofthetopic. IshouldalsonotethatIhavemixedfeelingsaboutthefiledofneuroscience. Ononehanditcannotbeignoredthatthefieldisexpandingourunderstandingandknowledgeabouthowourbrainsprocessdataandinfluenceourthoughtsandemotions. itisimpossibletoholdinhighregardafieldthatisbuiltuponafoundationofdestructiveexperimentationotherlivinganimals. Thisinefficientandbarbaricapproachhighlightsourownignoranceandlackofrealunderstandingaswellasfullydemonstratesthegreatstridesneededinourownevolution。
Eachsleepcycleisdividedintotwodistinctphases:non-REMsleepandREMsleep. ThefirstcyclesofthenlghttendtohaveshorterREMperiodsandlongerperiodsofdeepsleep. Thistrendreversesasthenightgoeson. Bymorning,mostsleepersspendalmostalloftheirtimeinstages1,2andREMsleepwithverylittleornodeepsleep(stages3and4). Stage1(Drowsiness)-Wedriftinandoutofsleepforabout5to10minutesandcanbeawakenedeasily. Stage2(LightSleep)-Oureyemovementsstopandourbrainwaves(fluctuationsofelectricalactivitythatcanbemeasuredbyelectrodes)becomeslower,withoccasionalburstsofrapidwavescalledsleepspindles. stages3and4(deepSleep)-Slowbrainwavescalleddeltawavesbegintoappear,interspersedwithsmaller,fasterwaves.ByStage4thebrainproducesdeltawavesalmostexclusively.Itisverydifficulttowakesomeoneduringstages3and4,whichtogetherarecalleddeepsleep.Thereisnoeyemovementormuscleactivity. REMSleep-DuringREMsleep,ourbreathingbecomesmorerapid,irregular,andshallow,oureyesjerkrapidlyinvariousdirections,andourlimbmusclesbecometemporarilyparalyzed.Ourheartrateincreases,ourbloodpressurerises,andmalesdeveloppenileerections. Neurotransmitterscontrolthesleeocvcle: 神经递质控制着循环: Ofparticularinteresttousisthatthebraincontrolsthesleep/wakecyclebyreleasingvariouschemicalsinthebraincalledneurotransmitters 令人感兴趣的是,睡眠/苏醒周期有大脑所释放的称为神经递质的化学品控制。 Thesechemicalsactonneuronsinthebrainthatessentiallyswitchandoffthevariousstagesofsleepandwakefulness.
ItisverydifficulttodepriveyourbodyofdeepsleeporofREMsleep,norshouldyouwantto。 ItisverydifficulttodepriveyourDeepsleepislyassociatedwithbodyrejuvenationandisimperativeformaintainingpropermentalandphysicalhealth. Itiswellknownthatintimesofsicknessorinjuryyoursleepschedulewillshifttoincludelongerandmorefrequentperiodsofdeepsleep. ItisThebodyishealingitself. increasedlevelsofagitationandstress,andagenerallylowerfeelingofwellbeing. Asaluciddreamenthusiastyoumustn'tsacrificeyourdeepsleepinthepursuitofhigherqualityluciddreams. Thisapproachisunsustainableatbest. Thereisaninterestingcounterparttothissleepcharacteristic. andthenexttimeyoufalltosleepyoumayexperienceaneffectreferredtoasREMrebound. bothalcoholandTHC(theactivechemicalinmarijuana)areknowntosuppressREMsleep. ifhighenoughlevelsofthesesubstancesareinthebloodstreamatsleeponset(acommoncasefortheusers)REMsleepwillbesuppressed. theindividualwillcommonlyexperienceseveralnightsofincreasedREMtimeandwillcommonlyexperiencelongandvividdreamexperiences. Keepinmindthatthemostvividdreamexperiences(aswellasmostluciddreams)occurduringREMsleep.
thesecondtheorycanbecalledtheForebraindreamtheory. ThetheoryquicklydevelopedtheconceptthatREMsleepisrequiredfordreamingtooccur. Thisbeliefwasbasedonthefactthat70-95%ofnormalsubjectswhowereawakenedfromtheREMstatereportthattheyhavebeendreamingwhereasonly5-10%ofnon-REMawakeningsproducedsimilarreports. SpecificallyitwasdeterminedthatthecholinergicbrainstemmechanismcouldswitchonorofftheREMsleepphaseandthereforedreamingbycontrollingthereleaseofspecificneurotransmitters. Accordingtothistheory,REMsleep(andhencedreaming)isswitchedonbythereleaseofaneurotransmittercalledacetylcholine(ACh)andturnedoffbythereleaseofadifferentneurotransmittercalledserotonin. Thebrainstemsimplycausesarandomfiringofneuronswhoseelectricalimpulsestraveltothecognitioncenterofthebrain(forebrain)wheretheyarepassivelysynthesizedbyitssystemintoabestfitforotherwiseincoherentdata. Inotherwordstherandomimpulsesmakeittotheforebrainwhichtriestoforcemeaningtothem.Itisthisprocessthatgeneratesdreams. Insupportofthistheory,ithasbeenshownthatdrugs/herbsthatpromotethereleaseofAChwithinthebrainstemcannotonlygenerateREMsleepbutalsogeneratedreams 在这一理论的支持下,已经表明,药物或者中药促进乙酰胆碱在脑干的释放不仅可以产生REM睡眠,也会产生梦。 Thesecondtheory(whichirefertoasthedopaminergictheory)is,inmyopinion,moresophisticated,andcompletethanthecholinergicandissubstantiatedbyaclinicalbasis. Thedopaminergictheorytriestofillintheholesleftbythecholinergictheory. Accordingtothedopaminergictheory,itistheforebrainthatcausesdreamingtooccurandnotthebrainstem. Thisassumptionhasanumberofimportantconsequences. ThereforetheconclusionmustbethatREMsleepisnotrequiredfordreamingtooccur. OneoftheclinicalfactsthatprovidesthebasisforthistheoryisthatbrainlesionswhichoccurintheforebrainareacantotallyhaltdreaminginanindividualwithouthavinganyaffectonREMsleep. Itwasalsonoticedthatthelesionswhichhalteddreamingwerelocatedinthesameregionoftheforebraintargetedintheprefrontalleucotomy(i.e.frontallobotomy)operationsusedasameansofbehaviorcontrol. ithasbeenconfirmedthat70-90%oftheseoperationsyieldedcompleteornearlycompletelossofdreaminginthesubjects. Itisthisregionofthebrainthatisrichwithfibersconnectingfrontalandlimbicstructureswithdopaminergiccells. thissystemwasthetargetoftheleucotomybecauseitisbelievedtocontrolthegoalseekingandpleasureseekingmechanisms. Damagealongthissystemproducesdisorderscharacterizedbyreducedinterest,reducedinitiative,reducedimagination,andthereducedabilitytoplanahead.
(接上) SoifREMsleepisnotresponsiblefordreaming,howdoesthedopaminergictheoryaddressthehighcorrelationbetweenREMsleepanddreamreports? ThistheorythatinsteadofREMsleepbeingrequired,amoregeneralstateofcerebralactivationduringsleepisrequired. REMsleepisoftenreferredtoasparadoxicalsleepbecausethebrainisbothasleepandsimultaneouslyhighlyactivated. ThevastmajorityofdreamreportsthatoccuroutsideofREMsleepareassociatedwithstage1orstage2sleep(i.e.verylightsleep). Thisobservation,togetherwiththeequallyimportantfactthatdamagetospecificareasofthefrontallobeobliteratesdreamingbutsparestheREMcycle,suggestsaspecificdopaminergic'dream-on'mechanismwhichisdissociablefromthecholinergic'REM-on'mechanism Whatcantheluciddreamenthusiastleamfromthesetwotheories? wearesimultaneouslyinbothstates. Acetylcholineisakeyluciditytriggerbecause,amongotherthings,itincreasesourwakefulness. anotherexcellentluciditytriggerisaneurotransmittercallednorepinephrinewhichismainlyassociatedwithbeingawakeratherthanwithbeingasleep.

OnemustaskhowthisispossiblesinceitappearsthatincreasedserotoninlevelsreducethetimespentinREMsleep(thestagewherethemostvividdreamstendtooccur) 你可能要问:这怎么可能? Serotonindreamstendtooccurinthemorninghourthemedicationsarewearingserotoninlevelsaredropping. Thissuggeststhatduringthefirsthalfofthenight,whiletheselevelsareelevated,REMsleepsuppressedandmoretimeisspentinthedeepernon-REMsleepstages. Asserotoninlevelsdrop,thebodycompensatesforthelackofREMsleepbymaintaininglowerlevelsforextendedperiodsoftime。 Onthepositiveside,serotoninboostingsupplementscancauseREMreboundwhichcansetupextendedperiodsofREMsleepinthemorninghours(ormorespecifically:afterthesupplementshavemostlywornoff).
